Course de Cote de Sancerre 2018

This was my sixth consecutive visit to the Course de Cote de Sancerre, an event which attracts a fantastic field for a regional hillclimb.  The champion for the last five years, Serge Thomas, was absent from the entry list so I knew I would see a different winner this year.  I thought it was going to be Gael Boisson in his Dallara F3 car, who was leading after two runs, but in the end a Norma Sports Racing car was the winner.  Well done to Jordan Lamonica for a fine third run. His father also got into the top eight in the same car.  Nobody got close to the lap record of Serge Thomas but it was good to see the top five separated by less than a second.

C'était ma sixième visite consécutive a la Course de Côte de Sancerre, un événement qui attire des concurrents de bonne qualité pour une course de côte régionale. Le champion des cinq dernières années, Serge Thomas, était absent de la liste des engagés, alors je savais que je verrais un autre gagnant cette année. Je pensais que ce serait Gaël Boisson dans sa Dallara F3, qui menait après deux manches, mais au final une voiture Norma était la gagnante. Bravo à Jordan Lamonica pour une belle troisième manche. Son père s'est également classé parmi les huit premiers dans la même voiture. Personne ne s'est approché du record pour l’épreuve de Serge Thomas mais c'était bien de voir les cinq premiers séparés par moins d'une seconde.

The event was run in good warm dry weather, even if the clouds opened for an absolute deluge a couple of hours later.  As usual the organization by Ecurie Jacques Coeur was superb and the event went along at a nice brisk pace.  Wonderful value for spectators at just six Euro to see such beautiful fast cars.  Great also to be so close to the action and for a number of the pictures I used my widest lens as I was just a car width away from the drivers cutting the apex at turn four.

L'événement s'est déroulé par temps chaud et sec, même si il a plu des cords quelques heures plus tard. Comme d'habitude, l'organisation de l'Ecurie Jacques Coeur était superbe et l'événement s'est déroulé à un bon rythme. Une valeur incroyable pour les spectateurs à seulement six euros pour voir ces belles voitures rapides. Génial aussi pour être si proche de l'action et pour un certain nombre de photos j'ai utilisé mon objectif ultra-large car j'étais juste à une petite distance des pilotes qui coupaient l'apex au virage quatre.

La 56ème Course de Côte du Mont-Dore - 2016

This Lamborghini Gallardo of Philippe Schmitter was part of a very good field of GTTS cars, perhaps the best they had seen at Mont Dore.

As it is such a beautiful area of volcanic mountains and lakes, it doesn't take much to attract me down to the region around Mont Dore.  The promise of seeing the famous Mont Dore Mountain Hillclimb and Charlie Martin competing in her second season of the French championship were easily enough.
This was round 10 of this year's 12 round Championnat de France de la Montagne.

In the days before specialists took over hillclimbing, French stars such as Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Henri Pescarolo, Maurice Trintignant, Jo Schlesser and Gerard Larrrousse used to compete here.   Beltoise won here on 5 occasions including in 1970 in a F1 Matra Simca MS11/12.

There are 43 corners to remember if you are to really attack this mountain. (Honda Civic).

I had been here once before in 2014 and then had just visited the top of the 5.75km hill.  This time, for a change, I visited the bottom section.  Unless noted, most photos were taken at the first corner which is not a very impressive place for spectating (no impression of speed or thrills and spills)  but does allow you to take some nice pictures.

Lots of contrast between light and shade for the drivers to deal with as well.

As well as Charlie Martin and the stars of French hillclimbing such as six time champion Nicolas Schatz, they were plenty of interesting cars to see both in the modern categories and the historic categories, over 160 in all.  Below are a selection of photos I took of them during the Saturday practice.

TOP FIVE RUNNERS

No surprise that Nicolas Schatz would win again in his Norma M20FC.  This Norma has a more powerful 4 litre engine than those 2 litre Normas you see at the regional hillclimbs.  He completed the course in under 2 minutes 17 seconds.

No surprise about second place either, which fell to Sébastien Petit in another Norma M20FC.  He was 4 seconds slower up the course.

Adding some variety to the proceedings in fourth place was this F3000 Reynard 95D of Nicolas's brother Geoffrey Schatz.

In fifth place and second fastest of the single seaters was Alban Thomas in a F3000 Reynard 01KL.

THE SPORTS RACING CARS CM/CN

This Osella PA 20S finished eighth overall driven by Benjamin Vielmi.  Osellas used to often win at Mont Dore back in the days when it was a European Championship round up until 2013.

The TracKing cars dominated the class for motor cycle engine sports cars.  They are meant to look like DTM cars.  This one was driven by Julien Pontille who finished second in his category and in the top thirty overall.

........and then there was of course our very own Charlie Martin who seemed to be taking this difficult course quite gingerly on the Saturday after her recent accident.

....and continues fairly wide and misses the apex that most were taking.  She finished 53rd overall and fifth in her class.

Groupe GTTS
A very impressive entry for this category which was won by Nicolas Werver in a Porsche 997 Cup S.  However, my favourite cars were:

The Renault Megane Trophy of Francis Dosieres.  

The Lamborghini Gallardo of Philippe Schmitter.  He was fourth of the production cars behind three Porsches.

The Ferrari 458 Challenge of Vincent Lagache.

One of a number of Mitjets taking part in this category was that of Jean-Michel Lestienne.

Groupe GT de Serie

The Porsche 996 GT3  of Rémi Courtois.

Groupe A/FA

Winner of Groupe A was Rémi Bernard in this Seat Leon Supercopa.

The Renault Clio Cup 3 of Jessy Schenk in turn 2.

Second in this class by the narrowest of margins was Anthony Dubois in the Scora Maxi.

Winner in this category was Xavier Burgevin in the Jide.

VHC
This was the ninth running of the VHC category for the classic cars from the sixties to the eighties.

Winner on scratch of the VHC section was Jean-Marc Debeaune in this Van Diemen RF82.

I can recommend lunch at the restaurant by the start line.  You can even watch the cars go by the the start line!
