Tour Auto 2020 - Regularity - On the road through Gien

No. 1.   The 1956 Porsche 550A of Ricci and Stoesser.  The River Loire in the background.

Every year I like to follow the first day of the Tour Auto with its beautiful old fast cars going through the north-centre of France where I live.  This year the Tour Auto was delayed from late April to early September due to the Covid19 crisis.  This also meant less access to spectators this year and thus I was unable to see the cars on a special stage or at Magny-Cours.   Thus I decided to stick in one spot and make sure I saw most of the cars pass through.  This spot ended up being Gien a nice town on the river Loire.  Actually, this was perfect for the regularity cars as they are not trying to go fast but just achieve an exact time on each stage of the rally.

For this post I have chosen my favourite twenty regularity cars that I took photos of on the day, set against the beautiful backdrop of Gien.  For information, there were about 87 regularity cars that took part in this historic rally.   It is a shame that so many spectators stop watching when all of the competition entries have been past because there are some real gems amongst theses regularity cars.  A example is the superb Porsche 550A above.

No. 2.  One of a number of Porsche 906s on the rally this year.    This is the 1966 version of the model that is often referred to either as the 906 or Carrera 6.  It had the French crew of Peculier and Sauvonnet.

No. 3.  A 1971 Ferrari 246 GT with the bridge over the Loire at Gien for a backdrop.  This car had an Italian crew of Brunori and Torlasco.

No. 4.  The 1973 Fiat 124 Abarth of Guenin and Pintenat.

No. 5.  Continuing the Italian theme, the 1968 Fiat Moretti 850 Sportiva of Thomas de Chesse.
